Thinking About Becoming an Egg Donor in 2025? Your New Year’s Prep Checklist
The beginning of the year is a great time to consider egg donation, as many aspiring parents make New Year’s resolutions to grow their families and may be considering using donor eggs to do so. Egg donation is a highly rewarding experience, but it requires specific qualifications and several appointments that you need to prepare for. Let’s break down how you can get ready to become an egg donor in 2025.
1. Reflect on Your “Why”
Before starting the egg donation process, it’s important to reflect on why you considered donating your eggs in the first place. While egg donors receive generous compensation for their time and effort, this shouldn't be your primary motivator. The egg donation process is extensive, and it's important to do it for the right reasons — to give the gift of parenthood to a couple or individual in need.
2. Understand the Requirements
Different egg donor agencies may have varying requirements, but most require their egg donors to be between the ages of 21 to 31, physically and psychologically healthy, and able to keep up with the many appointments that egg donation requires. Additionally, potential donors should have:
- Regular, monthly menstrual periods
- Both ovaries
- No current use of psychoactive drugs
- No history of substance abuse
- No family history of inheritable genetic disorders
3. Learn About the Process
The egg donation process begins with completing an application. Once it’s reviewed and you’re accepted, you’ll then undergo an initial medical, genetic, and psychological screening. If these results come back healthy, you’ll go through a cycle synchronization process that requires daily self-injections and regular monitoring to grow your egg follicles. When your follicles have matured enough for retrieval, you’ll receive a human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) injection to signal to the ovaries to release the eggs.
Approximately 36 hours after the hCG injection, you’ll undergo the egg retrieval procedure. Under light IV sedation, a physician will use an ultrasound to guide a needle through your vaginal wall and aspirate the follicle fluid which contains the eggs. This procedure only takes about 30 minutes.
4. Make Any Necessary Lifestyle Changes
You may need to adjust your lifestyle to meet the requirements for egg donors. This could involve becoming more physically healthy or ensuring that your schedule is free for all the necessary appointments related to the egg donation process. It’s essential to evaluate your current lifestyle and make any necessary changes before applying to become an egg donor.
